Such a decision influenced the whole life of Peter and made him to move from Britain and marriage unhappily. As for Clarissa?s husband he is a typical English conservative aristocrat who tries to make a successful political career. Naturally, it is Clarissa who has probably changed the most after her marriage. If in her youth she used to be sensitive, romantic person, then in her marital life she seems to be more and more shallow. Also there are other characters that represent different social layers. For example, Sally Seton, a close friend of Clarissa and Peter, by her social status and beliefs she is close to Peter. Since she has very controversial views, she is quite wild, smokes cigars that is quite shocking for that epoch and, consequently, she symbolizes a feminine rebel against a rigid social order of the early 20th century Britain.
